In addition to recreation and relaxation, Whitefish Mountain Resort can now add education to its long list of summer activities.
The Summit Nature Center opens Saturday, June 27, and is sure to be a fun and educational experience for the young and old. A cooperative project of the Flathead National Forest and Whitefish Mountain Resort, the nature center is located on the lower level of the Summit House at the resort. It is open daily, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., through Sept. 7.
Various animal hides and pelts are on display for visitors to test their animal identification skills, as well as books, DVDs and games. Children are invited to flex their creative minds with drawing and coloring, and measure themselves in comparison to different forest animals. Artworks from the Artist-Wilderness-Connection program will also be on display. In addition, visitors can learn about wildlife viewing and the importance of being safe and responsible when hiking and camping in bear country.
During July and August, daily wildflower and nature discovery hikes with a naturalist are offered free of charge at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Participants should meet the naturalist by the sign near the Summit House entrance.
Children ages 7-12 can become Junior Forest Rangers, with official badge and certificate, by completing an activity book obtained at the nature center. Families can also reserve a free “adventure pack” from the center, which contains educational field guides and other materials.
