Yellowstone County Sheriff Dies

By Beacon Staff

BILLINGS – Yellowstone County officials say Sheriff Chuck Maxwell has died after battling cancer for three years.

Maxwell became sheriff in 1993 when the county commissioners picked him to fill out the term of Sheriff Mike Schafer, who passed away days before, also from cancer. He had been in the department since 1977.

Maxwell was elected sheriff in 1994, 1998, 2002 and again at the age of 63 in 2006.

His health declined in recent years, but Maxwell still made some public appearances.

Yellowstone County Attorney Dennis Paxinos, who worked with Maxwell for 19 years, called Maxwell “a sheriff’’s sheriff.”
