Flathead, Glacier Win Football Openers

By Beacon Staff

Congratulations to both Glacier and Flathead high schools for opening up the 2009 football season with victories. For Glacier, the 41-21 romp over Billings Senior on Aug. 28 was the first home win in the program’s three-year history. Last year, Glacier finished 2-8, with both victories coming on the road. The year before, the Wolfpack didn’t win a game.

After losing 19 starters and facing a big re-building effort at the start of the season, the Flathead Braves didn’t come out of the gates flustered on the road against Butte. Propelled by Jackson Spooner’s 79-yard blocked field goal return for a touchdown in the second quarter, Flathead ran past Butte 21-10.

So far, Kalispell high schools are undefeated in this young season. It’s a fine way to kick off the year. Next up for Glacier is C.M. Russell at 7 p.m. at Legends Stadium in Kalispell on Friday. Flathead hosts three-time defending champion Helena Capital on Thursday night at Legends Stadium at 7 p.m.
