Get Trained to Be a Weather Spotter

By Beacon Staff

Have you ever looked at the incoming weather – dark, bruising clouds threatening on the horizon – and thought, “Hmmm. Someone should let everyone else know what’s coming our way so they don’t get stuck on the lake in a storm.”?

If so, you may be interested in the upcoming training sessions for severe weather spotters, hosted by the National Weather Service in Kalispell, Eureka and Libby from Oct. 5 through Oct. 7.

Officials from the NWS in Missoula are looking for volunteers to help report severe weather more quickly and accurately. The spotters call to report significant weather in their area (officials will define “significant” during training). Spotters may also be called upon by the NWS when they detect severe weather heading to a specific area.

Spotters receive training materials to help define meteorological events, as well as further training in the future. Another bonus: the NWS newsletter.

Here are the specifics on the times and locations:

October 5th at 7 PM at the Flathead High School, 644 4th Avenue West, Kalispell, MT
October 6th at 7 PM at the Lincoln County High School, 312 9th Street E, Eureka, MT
October 7th at 7 PM at the Libby High School, 150 Education Way, Libby, MT
