HELENA – Montana is now No. 1 in one national football poll.
The Griz (9-0) gained the top spot in this week’s Coaches Football Championship Subdivision poll. It moved up from second past Richmond, which lost last weekend.
Montana received 16 first-place votes, while No. 2 Southern Illinois and third-ranked Villanova each received six first-place votes.
In The Sports Network Football Championship Subdivision poll, Montana remains second behind Southern Illinois even though Montana received more first-place votes.
The Griz had 64 first-place votes, while Southern Illinois had 37. Southern Illinois vaulted to No. 1 from third, edging out Montana in total points 3,196 to 3,172.
The different poll showings may be due to Montana barely beating winless Idaho State on Saturday.
Meantime, in the new NAIA poll, Carroll remains ranked second behind Sioux Falls.
