PLACES: Old Steel Bridge Fishing Access

By Beacon Staff

Even as the weather sporadically changes between light chilling rain and sunny blue skies, the Old Steel Bridge fishing access is a high traffic area for anglers and those looking for an accessible outdoor break.

The new bridge spanning the Flathead River, connecting Holt Stage Road, where the Old Steel Bridge once stood, is still the centerpiece for the area. A pedestrian walkway borders the new sleek bridge making plenty of room for bikers, walkers and those fishing from the bridge.

The new entrance on the west side of the river leads to a large paved parking area with ample spaces, where a gravel boat ramp provides easy access to the river for either taking out or putting in.

Follow a newly paved pathway leading to the children’s fishing pond in the adjacent Shady Lane area, or continue exploring the well-carved, yet more rustic, paths that lead deeper into the surrounding woods to find a more private fishing spot along the bank of the river.

More space for river access and parking is located across the road from the main access entrance as well as on the east side of the river. Restroom facilities are located at both the eastern and western locations.

How to get there: From downtown Kalispell, go east on U.S. Highway 2 (East Idaho Street). Continue straight onto State Highway 35. Turn south on Shady Lane Drive, which dead ends at Holt Stage Road. Turn east on Holt Stage Road, the main entrance is on the north side before the river.
