WHITEFISH – Whitefish city leaders want some time to figure out what to do about proposed medical marijuana shops in the city.
The city council last week proposed an emergency ordinance to ban all medical marijuana stores for six months, while the council develops zoning rules for such stores. The council is scheduled to vote on the emergency ordinance on Dec. 7. It would be in effect for six months.
Current zoning allows marijuana shops downtown, but one person wanted to open up a shop across the street from a junior high.
City leaders want to consider adding a buffer zone around schools and churches or limiting such businesses to industrial zones or the city’s casino district.
