GREAT FALLS – Oversight of the nuclear missile operators, maintainers and other personnel at Malmstrom Air Force Base has been transferred to the new Global Strike Command.
Global Strike Command Commander Lt. Gen. Frank Klotz says the airmen in the field will still be working under the same bosses, following the same instructions and doing the same mission, but they’ll do it with different patches on their sleeves.
The Air Force decided to unify command of the nation’s nuclear assets after several incidents involving mishandling of nuclear materials and equipment happened a few years ago. None of those incidents happened at Malmstrom.
Malmstrom, F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming and Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota all went under the unified command on Tuesday.
