A Decade of Fashion

By Beacon Staff

During the last 10 years, fashion trends have traveled from 90s- to 70s- to 80s- inspired clothing and in that order with the latest transition happening almost two years ago. In the early part of the decade, women’s everyday wear was black dress pants and printed shirts. This was all you saw in the workplace and out at night. Then as we went to war, the 70s saw a huge influence in fashion. Women everywhere were wearing distressed jeans and hippie tops. There are some lingering “peace” inspired clothing, but mostly on T-shirts. Today leggings with oversized sweaters are a staple in every woman’s closet, which is directly from the 80s.

If you look at the trends, connect it with our political/military stance over the last decade. In the early 2000s, we dressed in what seemed boring and safe, then the 70s influence became really popular as if we were screaming peace and no one was listening. Today, it seems we may be pulling away from war, with a new president and new ideas, our style has become more influenced by the 80s with our flannel shirts, bright tights and the constant look of confused identity. So I would say fashion is really a direct view of the times.

As we head steadfast in into the next 10 years, who knows where we will end up. One can only hope it will be better than the last. As for fashion, let your style enhance your persona and let your love for looking good be seen in your daily routine. Happy New Year!
