BILLINGS – The U.S. Senate has confirmed Helena attorney Michael Cotter as the U.S. attorney for the District of Montana.
The Senate’s confirmation came on Dec. 24.
Cotter has been in private practice in Helena since 2000, and before that practiced civil law in Great Falls for two decades. His wife is Montana Supreme Court Justice Pat Cotter.
Cotter replaces U.S. Attorney Bill Mercer, who worked served in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for 15 years, including more than eight in the top spot.
The U.S. attorney is the supervising prosecutor of all federal crimes committed in Montana, including the state’s seven Indian reservations.
