COOKE CITY – Park County officials say a 33-year-old Billings man died in an avalanche while snowmobiling just outside of Cooke City.

Sheriff Alan Lutes says the snow slide happened at about noon Sunday, overtaking one of two people who were snowmobiling. The second person found the victim with a beacon and probe pole, and other snowmobilers came to their aid.

Lutes says the victim was partially uncovered and CPR was performed. He was fully uncovered by 1:11 p.m. Personnel from Park County Search and Rescue and Cooke City emergency services arrived five minutes later, but were unable to revive him.

The man’s name hasn’t been released.
