Free Documentary Screening at FHS on Sunday

By Beacon Staff

The Flathead Abolitionist Movement, Hockaday Museum of Art, Flathead Valley Soroptimist International Clubs and Kalispell’s Rotary Clubs will present a free screening of the documentary “CALL+RESPONSE,” which delves into the world of modern slave trade, otherwise known as human trafficking.

The documentary promises a pretty deep and intense message, highlighted by a star-studded cast and plenty of great music:

CALL+RESPONSE features actors Julia Ormond, Ashley Judd and Daryl Hannah, former U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright, New York Times’ journalist Nicholas Kristof, civil rights luminary Dr. Cornel West and others. From the child brothels of Cambodia to the slave brick kilns of rural India, they offer firsthand accounts of the modern-day slave trade, known as human trafficking.

Lending their voices and songs to the cause are award-winning musicians Switchfoot, Moby, Natasha Bedingfield, Five For Fighting, Cold War Kids, Matisyahu, Emmanuel Jal, Imogen Heap, Talib Kweli, members of Nickel Creek and Rocco DeLuca.

Local event organizer Diane Yarus said the documentary will showcase the hidden but very active world of human trafficking. Yarus said slave traders made more money in 2007 than many industries in the United States, including Google, Nike and Starbucks.

The documentary is rated PG-13. It will be shown Sunday, January 10, 3 p.m. at the Flathead High School auditorium. Visit www.callandresponse.com for more information.
