Three Local Coaches Named Best in State

The Montana Coaches Association has named its coaches of the year for fall sports. Terry Nelson, who led the Whitefish Bulldogs to yet another Class A championship, was named the boys golf coach of the year. Whitefish won its second straight title and fifth in the last six years.

Columbia Falls’ Richard Menicke was named boys cross country coach of the year after leading the Wildcats to the first Class A title in school history. Bill Brist, of Whitefish, was honored for girls cross country, after the Lady Bulldogs won the Class A title.

The Montana Coaches Association has listed its coaches of the year for fall sports.

Great Falls Russell’s Jack Johnson was named the Class AA football coach of the year. Steve Pinsoneault of Frenchtown was honored in Class A and Jay Santy of Huntley Project was honored in Class B. Jim Oberweiser of Drummond was honored for 8-Man football and Dave Udelhoven of Winifred received the 6-Man honor.

The MCA honored volleyball coaches Beth Tocci of Billings West, Liz Hanser of Billings Central, Iona Stookey of Huntley Project and Betty Klein of Ennis.

In golf, Billings West coach Rob Bazant and Bozeman girls’ coach Pat Darbro were honored in Class AA, while Whitefish boys’ coach Terry Nelson and Billings Central girls coach Jim Hawbaker were honored in Class A.

Clint May of Bozeman was named the Class AA cross country coach of the year for both boys and girls. Richard Menicke of Columbia Falls, John Sillitti of Manhattan and David Solem of Culbertson were honored in the other boys’ classifications. The other girls’ cross country coaches honored were: Bill Brist of Whitefish, Gary Ramsey of Colstrip and Mark Gerber of Belt/Centerville.
