Wolf Kills Hunting Hound in Montana

HELENA – Officials with the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks say a wolf has killed one hunting hound and injured two others north of Red Lodge.

Department Wolf Project Leader Carolyn Sime says wolves can be aggressive toward dogs any time of the year, but there is generally in increase in such conflicts between December and February. That’s when male wolves are wandering and competing for mates.

Since 1990, there have been 40 dogs reportedly killed by wolves in Montana, 60 dogs killed in Idaho and 22 in Wyoming.

The department is advising dog owners — especially those in rural or remote areas — should keep a close eye on their pets over the next few months.
