Avalanche Warnings Issued in Montana

By Beacon Staff

MISSOULA – Avalanche warnings have been issued for the mountains in west-central Montana and in the Bridger Mountains north of Bozeman as heavy snow fell on weak snowpack.

Steve Karkanen with the West Central Montana Avalanche Center says the avalanche danger is high at elevations above 6,000 feet in the Bitterroot, Rattlesnake, Southern Swan and Mission Mountains near Seeley Lake.

Karkanen says that the danger of an avalanche below 6,000 feet varies depending on how much snow is accumulating.

The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center says the avalanche danger is considered high on all slopes in the Bridger Mountains. The center urged people to stay away from avalanche terrain including avalanche runout zones.
