PLACES: Gateway Community Center Food Court

By Beacon Staff

Grab a bite to eat or a beverage while supporting local non-profits at the Gateway Community Center food court in the former Gateway West Mall.

Belly up to JR’s Pizza for a slice or choose from a list of creations for a quick and easy lunch. If it’s something besides pizza you want, visit Margie’s for breakfast specials as well as sandwiches, burgers and salads – to name a few – for lunch. Margie’s also has a full espresso bar for any kind of coffee beverage. All proceeds go to Meals on Wheels.

Meals on Wheels is serving about 80,000 patrons this year, according to J.R. Isles of JR’s Pizza, and the number is growing.

Sandwiched between the two eateries, at Sweet Expectations you can find arts and crafts – such as pillows, jewelry and knitted hats and scarves – created by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Also take advantage of the made-to-order baskets created by the volunteers. All proceeds go to RSVP.

The inspiration behind the project is Margie Blake. Blake was the first Meals on Wheels volunteer in 1970 and was awarded as the senior citizen of the year in 1993 and the United Way Senior Volunteer of the year in 1997. Blake’s generosity made it possible to purchase the equipment for the Gateway Community Center food court.

Join the food court for a grand opening celebration on March 25 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

How to get there: The food court is located in the Gateway Community Center on West Idaho Street (U.S. Highway 2), about one mile west of the Highway 2 and U.S. Highway 93 intersection downtown Kalispell.
