Billings Man Convicted of Three Murders

By Beacon Staff

BILLINGS – A District Court jury has convicted a Billings man of killing three neighbors in September 2006.

Richard Covington was convicted Thursday of three counts of deliberate homicide for the deaths of Patti Hubbert, Norman Leighton and Gerald Morris.

In their closing arguments Tuesday, prosecutors said physical and circumstantial evidence pointed to Covington as the killer.

Defense attorneys said prosecutors leaned heavily on witness testimony that lacked credibility. The defense also argued the prosecution failed to include evidence and testimony that suggests someone else could be the killer.

Covington’s trial started on Feb. 8.
