Authorities have identified the 37-year-old man who apparently died in an avalanche while skiing in Glacier Park as Brian C. Wright of Whitefish.
Glacier National Park officials received a report of a fatality at 3 p.m. Thursday and found the victim near the base of a recent avalanche on Mount Shields in the southeastern part of the park.
Friends of Wright had already begun looking for him, according to the Flathead County Sheriff’s office, since he had not been heard from for several days after leaving on a solo ski trip.
It is believed that Wright died immediately at the scene and was the only victim of the avalanche. Park officials returned to the scene Friday to investigate the slide’s cause.
Along with Whitefish, Wright lived part of the year in East Glacier.
