Important Meeting Tonight Regarding Flathead Lake Management

By Beacon Staff

Don’t miss your chance to learn about, and talk with, all of the representatives from various agencies regarding this complex and controversial issue. After attending last nights meeting in Polson, I am convinced that everyone has the ability (and responsibility) to participate and shape where Flathead Lake management goes in the near future and the long term as well.

This meeting is the first part of the NEPA process that sets out specific chains of events that must take place before any further management happens. A much defined process, albeit a short timeframe, was introduced to those at the meeting and it is important that we all understand and support this as the means to getting our input accounted for.

Representatives from MTFWP, CSKT, Flathead Reservation Fish and Wildlife Board, USFWS and others will be on hand to answer questions and take comments on the recent proposals. This is the process that is made up of two parts. The first is to develop a new Pilot Project that would accomplish what has not been accomplished in the first nine years, set specific reductions in a specific time period, and provide answers to inform future management.

The second part is to define reducing lake trout by what percent, in how many years and by what methods. This is where the public comes in and tonight’s process is the beginning of setting that strategy, if indeed it is decided that there should be a strategy beyond this point. I encourage everyone to attend. Tuesday April 13th Kalispell Red Lion Inn (Kalispell Center Mall) 7:00-9:00PM
