Investigation Finds Cattails in Bigfork Bay, Not Human Waste

By Beacon Staff

State environmental officials say an investigation into reports of human waste in Bigfork Bay of Flathead Lake has instead found decaying cattails.

Lisa Peterson is an information officer with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality.

She says it’s a case of mistaken waste.

Peterson says samples from the Bigfork Water and Sewer District and photos submitted by the district indicate there was no sewage dump.

Officials say trash and hygiene products spotted floating in the bay led some residents to report the decaying cattails as human waste.
