PLACES: Pig Farm Trails

By Beacon Staff

The grass is just beginning to grow and the trees are barely budding, but the weather has been favorable to the Flathead’s weekend warriors. And there is no better place to spin the cobwebs off your bike than Pig Farm Trails off Farm to Market Road.

Explore miles of trails winding, weaving and looping their way through the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation school trust property.

For beginners, gradual rolling hills provide an opportunity to become accustomed to mountain biking. For more advanced riders, harder trails can be found with steeper inclines, but even those are pretty short and can easily be walked without fearing injury.

“It’s good for beginners,” rider Jason Keister said. “There’s not really any nasty terrain. It’s user friendly.”

Most regular visitors to the area warn first-time riders to pay close attention to the trails. Due to many of them looping into each other it is easy to get turned around.

In the spring and through most of the summer, small potholes form on the trails. Keep an eye out for wildlife in the open fields and heavily wooded areas. Even on the hottest days of the year, most trails are shaded and provide for a cooler ride.

How to get there:
From downtown Kalispell, travel north on U.S. Highway 93. Turn west on West Reserve. Turn north on Farm to Market Road. Past Farm-to-Market Pork and a Kuhn Wildlife Reserve sign look for the trailhead parking on the west side of the road.
