HELENA – The Montana Land Board finalized a plan to raise rents on waterfront cabin sites.
Those who lease the land from the state say the higher rents make the properties far too expensive, and render their cabins and improvements worthless.
The plan approved by the Land Board Monday increases the rents based on new appraisals of the properties.
Lease holders say a cabin site’s rent could soon triple. The group says there are about 760 cabin sites currently leased from the state for a total of about $1.5 million.
The state’s public schools and universities, which get the money, argue the state has been ignoring its duty to generate top dollar for the land.
