YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. – Yellowstone National Park officials say two Montana men have died while trying to climb a frozen waterfall below the rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River.
The park was withholding the men’s names until their families could be notified. Park officials say both were in their late 20s and were believed to have been recent residents of Bozeman.
Friends told park officials Monday that the two hadn’t returned from a weekend day hike.
Rescuers found the climbers’ bodies Monday on a rock ledge about 300 feet below the canyon rim. Park officials say it appears an ice column collapsed during the men’s ascent.
Foul weather and the remote location were hampering efforts to recover their bodies Tuesday.
