Three Candidates for Montana Supreme Court Advance

HELENA – All three candidates who appeared on the primary ballot for two Montana Supreme Court seats will advance to the general election.

Helena attorney Beth Baker and District Judge Nels Swandal are competing for the seat being vacated by Justice William Leaphart (LEAP’-hart). Both advance to the Nov. 2 general election.

In Montana judges’ elections, if there are fewer than twice the number of candidates to the number of elected seats, all the candidates advance.

Justice Mike Wheat is running unopposed in to finish out the term of retired Justice John Warner. Gov. Brian Schweitzer appointed Wheat to Warner’s seat at the end of last year. Now Wheat must win in a special election to remain there until the term ends in 2014.
