MISSOULA – Missoula County officials say the body of a 38-year-old man who had been missing in the Lolo Peak area since Tuesday has been recovered.

Sheriff Mike McMeekin says the man’s body, identified as that of Chris Spurgin of Missoula, was located near the top of Lolo Peak at 9:20 a.m Friday. The sheriff says the body was found in treacherous and remote territory.

A helicopter crew from Malmstrom Air Force Base retrieved Spurgin’s body from the air, employing a winch at about 5 p.m. Friday.

McMeekin says it is unclear how the man died.

Spurgin was last seen Tuesday morning and had planned to hike and possibly ski the peak.
