Whitefish Black Bear Captured, Euthanized

By Beacon Staff

State wildlife officials say a food-conditioned male black bear was captured near Whitefish and euthanized.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks bear management specialist Tim Manley says the bear had approached people aggressively and pushed on house windows and doors. It had also killed chickens and geese and got into bird feeders and garbage. It was seen regularly in Whitefish Lake State Park.

The 150-pound cinnamon colored black bear was captured on Wednesday. Bear managers checked with landowners to make sure they had the right bear and held it for a day before euthanizing it to make sure no more calls were received from the areas the bear had frequented.

Manley says the bear was food conditioned to the point of being dangerous and relocation was not an option.
