Montana’s Top Tourism Official Confirms She Was Fired

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – The woman who served as the state’s top tourism official since 2002 has confirmed she was fired last week and says she’s considering fighting the decision.

Betsy Baumgart spoke publicly about her dismissal Thursday with the Great Falls Tribune.

Baumgart says she had no indication she was going to be fired when she walked into a meeting with newly appointed Montana Commerce Director Dore Schwinden on Aug. 20.

Baumgart says she was first asked if she wanted to resign, and was fired when she refused. She declined to give the reason Schwinden gave for firing her and says she has spoken with an attorney about challenging the decision.

Schwinden would not comment on the details of Baumgart’s departure.
