MINOT, N.D. – A Montana man accused of attacking another man with a knife at a North Dakota gas station will avoid prison but will spend the next 20 years receiving treatment for mental illness under supervision of the court.
Thirty-one-year-old Peter Maki of Kalispell, Mont., faced an attempted murder charge in a mid-March attack at a gas station along U.S. Highway 2 on the east edge of Minot. The Minot Daily News says the court determined that Maki lacked the mental capacity to be held criminally responsible for his actions.
Medical experts concluded Maki is not a danger to society if he is adequately medicated and supervised. Ward County State’s Attorney Roza Larson said Maki likely eventually will be transferred to Michigan, where he has family.
