Former State Employee Sentenced for Gas Theft

BILLINGS – A former state Department of Transportation employee who pleaded guilty to using an agency gas card to fuel personal vehicles has been given a six-month deferred sentence.

District Judge G. Todd Baugh on Monday also ordered Gilbert D. Propp to pay $2,645 in restitution.

The Billings Gazette reports Propp was a maintenance technician for the DOT with the Billings airport division when he was charged last year with using a state-issued fuel card to fill his private vehicle many times between January 2005 and June 2009.

Prosecutors alleged the thefts totaled about $9,000, but his attorney denied an accusation that Propp took $6,000 in diesel fuel.

Propp worked for the state for more than 20 years and resigned a week after the allegations surfaced.
