HELENA – The state Land Board has given its approval to a company’s plan to salvage submerged logs from Flathead Lake.
North Shore Development LLC says it hopes to start the project as soon as next month after working on the idea for several years.
The company says the old-growth logs are left over from a time when logging outfits floated the timber down rivers into the lake. It believes the logs are valuable because they are much larger than others on the market today.
The Land Board approved the plan on Monday. The state would get a small land-use payment from the company along with a royalty from the sale of some of the logs.
The company says it must get one final environmental permit, and is in the process of lining up customers before work begins in earnest.
