Q&A: Fair Manager Mark Campbell

By Beacon Staff

Flathead County recently hired Mark Campbell as its new fairgrounds operations manager. Arriving in the Flathead on Monday and getting to the office the next day, Campbell said he is still settling into his new job and looks forward to working with the community.

Flathead Beacon: How do you see the future of the Flathead County Fairgrounds, and how do you intend on helping the fairgrounds get to that point?

Mark Campbell: The Flathead County Fairgrounds is well positioned to become a first choice location for even more events throughout the year. New events can bring a greater diversity of commerce, education, and entertainment to the region. The tradition of the annual fair is strong. My role is to build upon those strengths and develop new features that will add to the enjoyment and celebration of the annual fair by all.

FB: What relevant fair experience do you bring with you to the Flathead Valley?

MC: My fair career started as a 4-H and FFA member. I began working full-time at fairs in 1985, having served as a manager since 1986. My most recent position was with the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe, Wash. While each of my fair positions has been unique in size and structure, they all reflect the interests of the community/regions they serve. I believe long-term success is directly related to how well the fair reflects these interests.

FB: Do you think the fairgrounds could eventually be financially self-sufficient? If so, how?

MC: Absolutely. This level of operations can be achieved through hard work, building of solid customer relationships, active use of the facilities, and diligence to a long term set of goals.

FB: What prompted you to apply and move to the Flathead for this job?

MC: The position intrigued me. The opportunity of being a team member that builds the facilities and operations into the self-sufficient and model facility is a challenge that will be both exciting and rewarding. I also found the people and attributes of this area welcoming.

FB: What sort of hobbies, activities or interests do you have outside your job?

MC: My time spent outside of work has included family and most things outdoors. We plan on taking time to explore the area.
