With a cross country state title already in the bank, Whitefish High School will again look to an athletic group of girls to bring home a crown at the Class A soccer tournament. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Belgrade 3-0 at home on Oct. 23 to advance to the state title game against Billings Central. The game is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Oct. 30 at Rocky Mountain College in Billings.
This should all seem very familiar to the Bulldogs. Before losing in the semifinals last year, Whitefish had played in four straight title games, winning one in 2006. Who did they beat in 2006? Billings Central. Who did they lose to in the semifinals last year? Billings Central.
And who is one of two teams to beat Whitefish during the regular season? Yes, again it’s Central. Throw in the fact that Central also beat Whitefish in 2008 title game you have the makings for an exciting match-up on Saturday.
Whitefish is seeking its third overall title – it also won in 2001 – and Central is seeking its third straight. Central is undefeated at 14-0 this season and is riding a 43-game winning streak. But Whitefish almost beat the Rams earlier this year, losing 2-1, and there’s no reason they shouldn’t make another run at it this weekend.
In the boys final, Libby hosts Belgrade at 1 p.m. on Oct. 30. The Class AA tournament is also held this week, with Glacier’s boys and Flathead’s girls playing in first-round games on Oct. 28. Click on the links below to see the full brackets.
