HELENA — Montanans have voted to put a 36 percent cap on payday loan interest rates and to block the government from imposing a certain real estate tax.
Voters also appeared to be favoring an initiative to abolish 7,800 outfitter-sponsored hunting licenses but appeared to be against calling a convention to rewrite the state constitution.
With relatively low-profile races at the top of the Montana ticket on Tuesday, the four ballot measures garnered a good deal of publicity this campaign season.
Supporters of the initiative to cap the payday loan rate say it’s a predatory practice that aims to trap vulnerable segments of the population in debt.
The tax initiative calls for amending the Montana constitution to block the government from adopting the sale or inheritance of property.
