PLACES: Whitefish Trail on Lion Mountain

By Beacon Staff

In the shoulder season between sunny summer days and winter’s snowy playground, it’s great to have a list of quick getaways to cure cabin fever. The Whitefish Trail system surrounding Lion Mountain is just one of those places.

The closest trailhead to Whitefish is the Lion Mountain Trailhead and is an awesome, relaxed hike. The well-maintained and marked trail wanders through conifers and quiet forest on state trust lands. The 1.5-mile section leads hikers and bikers to an overlook with beautiful views of Skyles Lake and the surrounding mountains.

If you desire more of a workout, continue on the trail for another 1.8 miles along the Skyles Section and another 2.4 miles along the Skyles-Beaver Section. Another trailhead to a 4-mile loop is accessible off Lupfer Road further north on U.S. Highway 93. All in all, 12 miles of trails are available to explore with plans to develop a total of 55 miles of recreational trail system.

Be sure look at the maps and information at the Lion Mountain Trailhead before heading out, or check out the trail’s website, www.whitefishtrail.org, to familiarize yourself with the area. The trailhead also offers plenty of parking and restrooms.

How to get there: From downtown Whitefish, continue north on U.S. Highway 93. Just past the golf course, veer right on Lion Mountain Road. A sign for the Lion Mountain Trailhead will come up on the right.
