Stillwater Announces Plans to Extend Two Mines

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – Stillwater Mining Company is moving to extend its two platinum and palladium mines in south-central Montana’s Beartooth Mountains.

The new mining activity would be within the boundaries of the company’s existing mine permits. The Graham Creek project is immediately to the west of Stillwater’s East Boulder Mine near McLeod and the Blitz project is just east of its Stillwater Mine near Nye.

On Wednesday, Stillwater announced initial development costs of $68 million for the two projects. The company is the only producer of platinum and palladium in the United States.

Stillwater also is in the midst of buying a mine near Marathon, Ontario. Shareholders in Marathon PGM on Monday approved the deal, worth $118 million in stock and cash when it was announced.
