Sheriff: Libby Woman Killed in Accidental Shooting

By Beacon Staff

MISSOULA – Lincoln County authorities say a 25-year-old Libby woman was killed in an accidental shooting that occurred while four friends were drinking, driving and shooting at road signs.

The Missoulian reports that Sarah Jane Gudmundsen was pronounced dead at a hospital Thursday night shortly after a bullet passed through the front passenger-side seat where she was sitting and struck her.

Her friend, 30-year-old Jacob William Stufflebeam, is accused of handling the gun when it discharged and has been charged with felony negligent homicide. He appeared in Justice Court on Friday and remains at the Lincoln County jail on $200,000 bail.

Sheriff Roby Bowe says the shooting was reported just before 11 p.m. Thursday. Deputies say the group told them they were driving in the Libby Dam area shooting at road signs and were on their way back to Libby when the accident occurred.
