LETTER: ‘Sheriff’s First’ Bill Deserves Support

By Beacon Staff

Dear Sen. Jim Shockley,

I have been looking over some of the bills you are carrying or sponsoring in the Senate and must applaud you on a few of them – specifically Senate Bill 17 and Senate Bill 18.

I am confused then why you would not support Senate Bill 114, which like one of your bills gives the county sheriff more authority or latitude. SB 114 also provides that latitude when confronted by an ever increasingly aggressive federal presence in Montana.

The statement you made about it being a 4th Amendment issue instead of a 10th Amendment issue is factually incorrect.

This statement has been re-produced on a website called polymontana.com.

I find nothing in the U.S. Constitution’s 4th Amendment, which supports your position in the article to oppose SB 114. Perhaps I have an outdated version of the U.S. Constitution.

To support Montana, its citizens, your oath to office and to the Montana GOP, I urge you to reconsider your opposition to SB 114.
