Northwest Teams Lose Three, Win One in State Basketball

Northwestern A went one for four in the first round of the Class A boys and girls state basketball tournaments Thursday, with the Columbia Falls boys claiming the sole victory.

The Wildcats beat Belgrade 53-36 to advance to the Class A boys state semifinals against defending champion Laurel at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Montana State University in Bozeman.

But just a few miles west, the Columbia Falls girls came up short of joining the boys, losing to Belgrade 69-57 in the first round. The Wildkats play Anaconda at 2 p.m. at the Belgrade Special Events Center today in a loser-out game. Belgrade faces Laurel in the semifinals at 8 p.m.

Polson’s boys lost to Central A No. 1 Butte Central 51-41 Thursday night. The Pirates face Billings Central in a loser-out game at 2 p.m. today. Butte Central squares off against Dillon in the semifinals at 8 p.m. tonight.

The winner of that game will play the winner of Laurel and Columbia Falls in the championship at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

In girls, Butte Central beat Libby 65-27 in the first round. Libby plays Billings Central in a loser-out game at 12:30 today. Butte Central faces Dillon in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. this evening.

The winner will meet the winner of Laurel and Belgrade in the championship at 8 p.m. Saturday.
