Former Prep Standout Killed in Crash Near Lakeside

By Beacon Staff

MISSOULA – Authorities say a 29-year-old man is dead after a single-vehicle rollover crash on U.S. Highway 93 south of Lakeside.

The Montana Highway Patrol says Tanner Kahler lost control of his pickup truck just after 4 a.m. Monday when he encountered either black ice or other slick conditions. Trooper Robert Hensley says the vehicle slid off the highway, overturned and struck a rock embankment.

The Patrol says alcohol and speed do not appear to have played a role.

Kahler, who died at the scene, graduated from Loyola Sacred Heart High School in Missoula in 2000, earning multiple all-state honors in football and basketball. The Missoulian reports he also played baseball for the Missoula Mavericks and in the Pac-10 Conference for Washington State University.
