By Beacon Staff

HELENA – The U.S. Geological Survey says a minor earthquake was reported in the Centennial Valley in southwestern Montana, but no damage was reported.

The magnitude 4.1 earthquake shook the area about 24 miles east of Lima and about 18 miles north-northeast of Spencer, Idaho at 1:05 a.m. Tuesday. An aftershock with a preliminary magnitude of 1.8 followed about six minutes later.

Mike Stickney with the Earthquake Studies Office at the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology in Butte says the initial quake was felt as far north as Helena and as far south as Idaho Falls.
