State Labor Department Fines Contractor $40K

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – The Montana Department of Labor and Industry says it has issued the largest fine ever imposed on a contractor in the state for violating contractor registration laws.

John Mulinski and his company, Sunrise Quality Construction, must pay the department $40,000, which represents $5,000 for each of eight violations. The department says he took substantial down payments and failed to provide the true address of his company, making it impossible for homeowners to track him down after he left roofing jobs unfinished.

The department says Mulinski gave homeowners two addresses in Whitefish even though his company wasn’t affiliated with the locations.

Labor Commissioner Keith Kelly said Monday the department wants to send a clear message that such business practices won’t be tolerated.
