HELENA – Lewis and Clark County officials say one man is dead after an officer-involved shooting during a traffic stop just north of Helena.
Sheriff Leo Dutton says three deputies exchanged gunfire with the man, and a total of 14 shots were fired. Dutton says no deputies were injured in the shooting at 11:35 p.m. Sunday.
The Independent Record reports that as of midmorning Monday, the man’s body remained in the car on North Montana Avenue. His name has not been released.
The state Division of Criminal Investigation was investigating. The deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave. Dutton said he would release their names on Wednesday.
Dutton says they are looking for a “person of interest” to interview, but there is no danger to the community.
