Snowpack Delays Opening of Glacier Campgrounds

By Beacon Staff

WEST GLACIER – Glacier National Park officials say a heavy snowpack and lingering cool temperatures have delayed the opening of some of the park’s east side campgrounds.

The opening date of the Many Glacier, Cutbank and Two Medicine campgrounds has been pushed from Memorial Day weekend to June 10. Meanwhile, the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn will also open June 10 instead of June 3.

May has shown some signs of spring, but weather stations at West Glacier, East Glacier and Saint Mary all recorded near record or record precipitation amounts for April. Crews also have encountered snow drifts as high as 25 feet in the eastern part of the park.
