HELENA – The Montana Office of Public Instruction says the state’s dropout rate declined last year.

In a report released Tuesday, the state’s education department says the dropout rate in grades 7-12 was 3 percent last year compared to 3.6 percent in 2009.

The high school dropout rate also decreased in that period from 5.1 percent to 4.3 percent.

The dropout rate for Native American students in grades 7-12 declined from 8.8 percent in 2009 to 7.2 percent in 2010.

The rate was 10.6 percent for American Indian high school students.

The report says American Indian students make up about 11 percent of the total enrollment for those grades, but account for 26 percent of dropouts.
