Popular Trails Open in Glacier National Park

WEST GLACIER – Two popular trails in Glacier National Park have opened, though one has sections still covered in ice and snow.

Park officials say the Highline Trail at Logan Pass opened Friday morning, while the Ptarmigan Tunnel was cleared Thursday.

Officials say a lingering snowpack prevented the trails from opening earlier. The Ptarmigan Tunnel was supposed to open June 24.

Officials say visitors should be careful on the Highline Trail at Logan Pass because some snow remains.

Park spokeswoman Denise Germann says that everything has been two to four weeks behind the normal schedule because of the large snowpack.

She says hikers should turn around if trail conditions are too challenging, or use an ice ax and other self-arrest equipment for difficult areas.
