Man in Custody After Shots Fired at Flathead Deputy

By Beacon Staff

A man who authorities say opened fire on a Flathead County sheriff’s deputy with an assault rifle following a traffic stop has been taken into custody while a search continued Saturday for a female passenger.

Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry says a SWAT team and helicopter were used to find the man late Friday.

Authorities say a deputy stopped a car on the west side of Kalispell at about 7 p.m. Friday, and when he approached the vehicle, a man stepped out with an assault rifle and opened fire. The man and a female passenger fled.

The deputy was uninjured, but his patrol car was hit.

Police say they are still searching for the female passenger. Names have not been released.
