Woman Gets Prison for Attempted Purse Theft

By Beacon Staff

A 23-year-old woman who was high on morphine when she pulled an elderly woman to the ground as she tried to steal the woman’s purse has been sentenced to 10 years in the Montana Women’s Prison.

District Judge David Ortley sentenced Kimberly Ann Ward on Thursday. Ward pleaded guilty to felony robbery for trying to steal the woman’s purse on Jan. 19.

Court records say the woman refused to relinquish her bag and was dragged by Ward, suffering a broken pelvis and other injuries.

Flathead County Attorney Ed Corrigan called the crime “potentially fatal.”

Defense attorney Lane Bennett says Ward was high on morphine and acted out of fear that she did not have enough money to keep up with her drug addiction.
