HUNGRY HORSE – State wildlife officials trapped two grizzly bears responsible for killing more than 100 chickens at a residence south of Glacier National Park and relocated them about 20 miles away, near the Hungry Horse Reservoir.
Fish, Wildlife and Parks bear specialist Tim Manley said that this year’s late snowpack is responsible for an increase in human/bear encounters. Manley says in a normal year, he captures and relocates about 15 bears. Through Thursday, that number stood at 11.
The bears relocated on Thursday killed the chickens at a residence near Lake Five.
Manley says with fall approaching, people need to be careful about what they leave outside. He also asks people to notify wildlife officials if bears are hanging around their property before they become a problem.
