Main Rail Line Across Montana Reopened After Derailment

HAVRE – A BNSF Railway spokesman says the main rail line across northern Montana has reopened after an eastbound train derailed just east of Havre.

Gus Melonas says the main line was back in service at 10 a.m. Monday, after crews moved two dozen cars that derailed Sunday afternoon away from the tracks.

The three locomotives pulling the 93-car train remained on their sides Monday. The derailed cars will be scrapped while the locomotives will be repaired.

Melonas says two crew members were treated for injuries suffered in the derailment and released from the hospital.

Lumber and lentils spilled in the derailment will be picked up this week, while an environmental team cleans up a 1,500-gallon diesel spill.

Melonas says the cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
