Lawyer Says Police Used Excessive Force on UM Players

By Beacon Staff

MISSOULA – The attorney representing two University of Montana football players say police used excessive force in shocking them with a stun gun before arresting them at a loud party.

Police Chief Mark Muir says the department is doing an internal review, but told the Missoulian he’s received no response to his requests for information to substantiate the “excessive force” claims.

Quarterback Gerald Kemp and cornerback Trumaine Johnson were arrested early Sunday at Johnson’s apartment. Police say Kemp hit one of the officers in the chest. They have denied misdemeanor charges.

Attorney Darla Keck says numerous people witnessed the arrest and at least two people videotaped the events.

Coach Robin Pflugrad said he “could not say” if Johnson and Kemp will play against Weber State on Saturday.
